You wrote the script. What inspired this idea?

It started with a sketch. I was playing around with a picture of a character in a seated position, as if sitting on a chair, which was drawn on another layer. When I started sliding the two layers apart, it all looked wrong. But also interesting. Coincidentally, I'd had an experience of an earth tremor some time before, and remembered thinking what a photograph of that would look like, with things moving momentarily apart and then back together again. The psychological elements came later.

What does "Skhizein" mean?

It's Greek and it means “split” or “cleave.” The word “schizophrenia” incorporates this. The other half, “phren,” means“spirit.”

Do you think that Henry is going to be alright?

Henry is alright now, he doesn't need to get organized anymore. From where he is now, he can see things we are not capable of seeing.

Skhizein has won numerous audience awards around the globe. Why do you think this story has such a strong effect on viewers?

Yes, about half the awards we have won (over 60) have been audience awards. It's really fantastic for me to have this feedback from the audience. It is not a very funny film, nor is it a dark film. I think many people actually feel or have experienced feelings similar to Henry. So Henry touches them. Even though it's animation and kind of absurd, the film has its own logic and the audiences seem to get it.

How long did you work on this film?

It was one very long year. There was a very small team working on it. For a long period, there were just two of us.

What do you appreciate the most in working with animation?

I feel comfortable with animation because you can make it all by yourself. Of course I prefer to have people working on my short, but if it’s not an option, there is always a way to make the film.
I think the short format is the best for animation. You can be very innovative with the form and the meaning. The audience can also deal much better with different aesthetics and experimentation during a short duration.

For feature films, it's different. I believe it's hard to not be corrupted by any technical process/pipeline when you do an animated feature film. Fortunately a lot of good animated features can prove me wrong

What are the essential elements that make a good animation film?

A good animation film should be first and foremost a good film.
